Bevan Manson has performed with Jimmy Guiffre, George Garzone, Bob Sheppard, Gunther Schuller, Howard McGhee, Ira Sullivan, Ron Jones L.A. Big Band, Cecil McBee, his own trio and sextet, and many others. He is noted for his harmonic subtlety, tuneful melodies and rhythmically complex approach to improvisation.Formerly a faculty member at New England Conservatory and UC Berkeley, he currently directs the jazz program at Ventura College. As a composer, his music has been commissioned and performed by the Encore Saxophone Quartet, San Francisco Symphony, the Lobo Ensemble, Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra violist Victoria Miskolczy, and clarinetist Gary Gray, French hornist Brian O’Connor, and many others. He is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. Bevan has also written string arrangements for NYC baritone saxophonist Gary Smulyan, which he conducted at the Blue Note, and written arrangements recorded by Manhattan Transfer vocalist Cheryl Bentyne and Cathy Segal Garcia.His new CD, ’The Jazz Cave’ features his trio with Edwin Livingston, bass and Matt Gordy, drums as well as several tunes with celebrated jazz vocalist Tierney Sutton, and appearances by NYC organist Brian Charette, bassists Jeff D’Angelo and Santino Tafarella, and percussionist Brad Dutz.
